Review: Whether you’ve never read the Bhagavad Gita, are a student of
eastern religious teachings, or just someone interested in
spirituality in general, Lord Sri Krishna’s Commandments: Timeless
Secrets Extracted from Priceless Scriptures by Vinayak
Raghuvamshi is a useful read. Although the Gita is an ancient
religious text, the author’s stated approach is a simple and modern
one: “Totally spiritual and scientific. Nothing religious about it.” His
emphasis is on specific commandments found in the Gita. “Timeless
secrets extracted from priceless scriptures for success, happiness,
peace, prosperity and liberation.” In addition to discussing these
commandments, Raghuvamshi provides summaries on topics such
as food, devotion, and speech. He also provides a list of references
and links for those readers who may wish to investigate or study
the Bhagavad Gita further.

In Lord Sri Krishna’s Commandments, Raghuvamshi distills the Gita
to eighteen simple statements. The object is a positive life
transformation as the reader receives divine love and grace in
studying and applying these statements or commandments to one’s
life. They are universal in spirit and applicable to followers of any
faith since they touch on core concepts of spirituality found in all
major religions. Except for the specific mention of God, most of
these commandments are also applicable to people who follow a
humanistic philosophy as well. For example: “2. A calm mind is
essential for achieving liberation. Learn to handle both pain and
pleasure calmly.” Or, “15. Be fearless. Be gentle. Be strong. These
are essential for Goodness to thrive.” In today’s world, anything
that encourages people to be peaceful and happy in themselves
and to work towards the peace and happiness of others is a
praiseworthy thing and well worth reading.

Appearance: 5 Stars

The appearance of a book can make a significant impact on the
experience of a reader, whose enjoyment is often enhanced by an
enticing cover, an intriguing table of contents, interesting chapter
headings, and when possible, eye-catching illustrations.
Plot: The characters of a book should be well defined with strengths and
flaws, and while they do not have to be likable, the reader does
have to be able to form a connection with them. The tone should be
consistent, the theme should be clear, and the plot should be
original or told from a unique perspective. For informative books —
those without plot and characters–this rating refers primarily to
your concept and how well you presented it.

Development5 Stars

Development refers to how effectively you told your story or
discussed your topic. The dialogue should be realistic, the
descriptions should be vivid, and the material should be concise
and coherent. Organization is also a key factor, especially for
informative books — those without plot and characters. The order in
which you tell your story or explain your topic and how smoothly it
flows can have a huge impact on the reader’s understanding and
enjoyment of the material.

Formatting: 4 Stars

Formatting is the single most overlooked area by authors. The way
in which you describe scenes, display dialogue, and shift point of
view can make or break your story. In addition, excessive
grammatical errors and typos can give your book an amateurish
feel and even put off readers completely.
